Abstract     The aim of the study was to follow up the influence of glucose loading on T-3 and T-4 plasma concentration in Lipizzaner foals during the first year of life. The trial was performed on seven growing foals (6 males, 1 female) kept under controlled nutritional conditions. The diet of foals and mares consisted of normal local Karst hay with added grain and superconcentrate mixture. Some anatomical parameters, as well as hormonal profile were measured regulary every three months. During the three day lasting hormonal trial glucose loading test was performed. Before and after glucose application (3g/kg bw via gastric tube) blood samples were collected every hour and T-3 and T-4 measured. Basal values of both thyroid hormones decreased throughout the first year of life. The mean T-4 plasma concentration decreased from 35.0 nmol/L, from the beginning to 15,9 nmol/L at the end of the first year. The mean T-4 plasma concentration decreased from the beginning of the trial to the end of the first year. After each glucose loading test the concentration of T-3 and T-4 increased significantly (P<0.05). Three hours after oral glucose application both hormones decreased and returned to pretreatment values. The highest T-3 and T-4 response was detected in foals aged from one to three months of age. Results indicate the influence of stage of maturity of thyroid gland on secretion of both hormones after carbohydrate loading test.
