Abstract     The budgerigar's (Melopsittacus undulatus) skin structure during the juvenile physiologic moulting was studied in comparison to the skin of the thyroxine treated animals. The experiment was carried out in September and October on sixteen 6-8 months old budgerigars. They were separated into 2 groups: with thyroxins treated (L-T4 1000 mg/kg was applied directly into a crop, during the period of 25 days) and control ones. By using the polyclonal rabbit's antibodies against vimentin the vimentin positive cells in the dermis were shown. The morphometrical analysis of these cells was performed. Lymphocyte infiltrations in dermis were presented by the rabbit's antibodies against human T lymphocytes. The particular vimentin positive cells distributed in a thin layer just under the epidermis were stained. These cells were larger in the treated animals with regard to their perimeter (p=5.33 +- 2.88 micro m) than in the animals of physiologic moulting (p=2.33 +- 1.22 micro m). The volume density (%) of the dermis lymphocyte accumulations was larger in the treated animals (thorax: 0.065+-0.001, back: 0.097+-0.001, head: 0.131+-0.000) than in the control animals (thorax: 0.039+-0.001, back: 0.017+-0.000, head: 0.015+-0.000).
