Abstract     Insulin has been used in diabetotherapy for the past 75 years. During this period of time morbidity and mortality due to ketoacidosis and aketotic hyperosmolarity syndrome has decreased. Late complications of diabetes have become the main cause of morbidity, invalidsm and mortality. Diabetic microangiophathy and macroangiopathy (atherosclerosis) affect all organs, most frequently presenting with blindness or defective vision, renal affection, cerebral stroke, gangrene of lower extremities and myocardial infarticon. A connection between the degree of controlled type I diabetes and the development of diabetic microangiopathy has been proven. The British prospective study of the type II diabetes is in its final phase and the results obtained so far show that also in this type of diabetes the developement of late complications can be slowed down by better regulation of the metabolic processes. The diabetic late complications with the exception of nephropathy are reviewed.
