Abstract     Out-patient care of type 2 diabetics on diet or oral antidiabetic treatment without advanced chronic complications is being transferred from diabetes centres to the general practitioner's primary care level. The primary health care diabetic team comprising a general practitioner and a nurse has to be educated in order to take care of diabetics properly. The quality of care should meet the demands of the internationally accepted standards of care, as proposed by various professional diabetes groups. The adequate quality of primary diabetes care is provided by appropriate treatment, systematic detection and prompt treatment of chronic complications, as well as evaluation of the quality of care itself. Education of type 2 diabetics has to be carried out also in the primary care team. An educated diabetic shares the responsibility of his own diabetes care. Monitoring of the quality of care is still not a constituent part of everyday practice in this country.
