Abstract     The samples of longissimus dorsi (LD), rectus femoris (RF) and vastus intermedius (VI) muscles of four adult pigs have been histochemically stained for myofibrillar ATPase to show type 1, 2A, 2B and 2C fibres. Monoclonal antibodies specific for rat myosin heavy chain isoforms (MHC-1, -2A, -2X and - 2B) have been tested on serial cryosections of the same three muscles. The results of immunohistochemical analysis were not in perfect agreement with those of histochemical one. The application of monoclonal antibodies against MHCs has shown a heterogeneity within histochemically defined fibre types. Most of type 2A fibres contained MHC-2A which were also co-expressed with MHC-1 in type 2C fibres. In the rest of type 2A fibres and in the majority of type 2B fibres MHC-2A and -2B were co-expressed. The results of our immunohistochemical analysis neither confirm nor exclude the existence of MHC-2X in porcine muscle fibres. However, if MHC-2X exist, they are probably co-expressed with MHC-2A and -2B in a large number of type 2 fibres.
