Abstract     We have followed the muscle development of seven Lipizzaner foals during their first year of life. Muscle biopsies were taken from the middle gluteus muscle at their age of 3, 6, 9 and 12 months respectively. The muscle fibre type composition and fibre type areas were studied. The percentage of the type IIA fibres increased significantly (from 33% to 41%) and the percentage of the type IIB oxidative fibres decreased significantly (from 20% to 14%) between the first and second samplings. Afterwards the trend was continuing, however no significant changes were found. A marked, although not significant, decrease in percentage of the IIB fibres was noticed (from 51% to 43%) between the first and the fourth samplings. The mean values of cross-sectional areas of all three fibre types increased significantly with age. The mean value of the cross-sectional area of the type IIB oxidative fibres was significantly smaller than that of the IIB non oxidative fibres. Our results show that during the first year of life gluteus muscles of Lipizzaners are going through intensive growth and moderate muscle fibre type remodelling.
