Abstract     Clostridium botulinum produces a heat labile neurotoxin which prevents the release of acetylcholine from cholinergic synapses. Human botulism is usually caused by neurotoxins of type A, B, E or F. After the short incubation period (12-36 hours) the symptoms begin: nausea, vomiting, fatigue, blurred vision, diplopia, dry mouth, dysphagia, dispnoe and obstipation. The patient is alert and afebrile. Botulism of type A is more severe than type B and the mortality rate is higher.
