Abstract     The research in work efficiency was carried out in the frames of author's MA thesis. Its purpose was to ascertain the attitude of nurses to their profession, their opinion about the attitude of other health workers, their clients and patients to their work, and, above all, their opinion about the pay they receive, their familiarity with the criteria for the evaluation of work, and their satisfaction with their incomes. The findings of the research confirmed the fact that the majority of nurses decided for the profession from humanitarian reasons. Rewards of non-material nature, for example satisfaction of patients, positive interpersonal relationships among health workers, independency at work, popularity, possibility of additional education and promotion, and their immediate superiors statisfaction with their work, mean a lot to nurses. Although the income is not the most important motive leading nurses in their work, they are not satisfied with it. Above 50% of the employed are familiar with the system of income distribution. They are aware of the importance of the evaluation of work efficiency; however, they state that in many health institutions, horizontal promotion is not carried out.
