Abstract     The aim of the present synthesis report is to update the comparison of data on treatment demands in eleven European cities. With the synthesis the following foundamental problems must always be taken into consideration: the (lack of) uniformity of terms, instruments used and methods and evaluation of data collection; the existence of cultural and political differences between individual cities and countries; the existence of different structures with regard to treatment systems. Compared to last year, the data quality has improved significantly, whilst problems concerning comparability have remained stable. The differences between the various cities are: proportion of first treatment demands varies from 14% in Amsterdam to 54% in Koper; proportion of females varies from 4% in Istanbul to 42% in Oslo; proportion of persons under 20 varies from 0% in Amsterdam and 2% in Paris to 28% in Dublin; living with parents or extended family varies from 12% in Oslo to 68% in Barcelona and 67% in Dublin; proportion of persons in regular employment varies from 4% in Gdansk to 38% in Istanbul; heroin and other opiates as primary drug varies from 70% in Liege and 71% in Oslo to 93% in Geneva; injecting as route of administration varies from 28% in Liege to 81% in Oslo; mean age of first time use of primary drug varies from 16.5 years in Gdansk to more than twenty years in Koper and Geneva; mean years since first use varies from 5 years in Dublin to about 8 years in Barcelona and Gdansk; proportion of the persons sharing needles and syringes varies between 4% in Zurich and 49% in Gdansk.
