Abstract     The gastroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic disease associated with frequent relapses. Long-term follow-up of the disease and the therapeutic management of the patient necessitate thorough knowledge of the disease and a step-by-step diagnostic approach. The choice of drugs depends on the seriousness of the esophageal damage. Cisapride increases the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter and improves esophageal peristalsis, while omeprazole, famotidine and ranitidine reduce the acidity of the gastric juice passing into the esophagus. Frequent relapses of the disease necessitate long-term maintenance treatment. Additional factors playing an important role in the treatment are dieatary measures and a change in the habits of life. If drug therapy fails, surgical treatment may be considered.
