Abstract     The aim of the study was to find the impact of IGF-I, IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3 levels in the serum and follicular fluid on the ability of oocytes to fertilize. The levels of IGF-I, IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3 were studied in the serum and follicular fluid of 53 patients with tubal infertility, undergoing in vitro fertilization in unstimulated cycles. The ability of oocytes to fertilize was interpreted as an indicator of oocyte quality. The levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in the serum and follicular fluid of patients with fertilized oocytes (n=35) did not differ from the respective levels in patients with unfertilized oocytes (n=18). Significantly higher IGFBP-1 levels were found both in the serum and follicular fluid of patients with unfertilized oocytes. The serum fasting insulin levels did not differ between the groups. Our results show the impaired ability of oocytes to fertilize in patients with elevated IGFBP-1 levels in the serum and follicular fluid.
