Abstract     The aim of the study was to evaluate ovarian response to gonadothropin stimulation, with and without premedication with GnRH agonist in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. Forty women included in the IVF-ET programme were divided into two groups. In the first group Buserelin was given subcutaneously 500 micro g once per day until pituitary desensitization was achieved (15.2 = 6.2 days). Ovarian stimulation was performed by combination of GnRH agonist and hMG. The second group was treated by conventional hMG and hCG protocol. Comparing the duration of stimulation, the average E2 level on the day of hCG administration, the number and size of all observed and aspirated follicles, oocytes, recovered and fertilized and the number of embryos replaced between the groups, no statistically significant differences were found. These data suggest that short pretreatment with GnRH agonist can temporarily correct endocrine abnormalities of polycystic ovary syndrome but do not change the ovarian response to gonadotrophin stimulation and multiple follicular development.
