Abstract     Imaging Plates (IP) are recently developed sensitive integrating imaging detectors based on the effect of photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL). Various types of IPs sensitive to X- and gamma rays, electrons and other heavier charged particles as well as neutrons are commercially available. The first IP detector systems were intended for medical diagnostics and applications in medical autoradiography and electron and X-ray diffraction studies. However, recently developed IP systems offer excellent applications of IP also in the field of NDT, in particular in industrial X-and gamma ray radiography and neutron radiography, as shown by recent work at BAM (Berlin) and IJS (Ljubljana). In the document the principles and characteristics of the IP systems are summarized. Results of first experiments to evaluate the applicability of IP in the examination of welded joints performed at the Welding Institute in Ljubljana are presented. The applicability of IP as a new image recording system inthe radiography of welds was tested on steel test pieces with artificial defects as well as on welded joints with typical defects such as pores and non-metallic inclusions. The results are discussed in view of the comparison with conventional film radiography and experience with IPs already obtained elsewhere.
