Abstract     Optical Density-Screen thickness characteristics have been calculated for some common metal converters used in thermal and resonance neutron imaging with radiographic films. The contribution of backdiffused betas to film optical density was taken into account. Back and front screen film exposure techniques were treated. Screen thicknesses for optimal optical density were calculated for Rh, In, Dy and Au as common thermal and resonance neutron converters. The measured values of optimal screen thicknesses for In, Dy and Au thermal neutron converters reported in few well documented experiments published elswhere agree quite satisfactorily with calculations. Similar experiments for the estimation of optimal screen thickness of resonance converters by the authors knowledge have not yet been published. With the increasing interest for epithermal neutron radiography it might be useful to perform the measurements of optimal screen thicknesses for resonance converters as well.
