Abstract     Oxygen supplementation has been proven to be lifesaving during exacerbation of COPD. It increases the life expectancy of patients with chronic respiratory failure. The goal of therapy is to raise the SaO2 above 90% and/or the PaO2 above 8 kPa without elevating the arterial carbon dioxide tension by more than 1,3 kPa or lowering pH to less than 7,25. Oxygen administration should start at a low dose and be adjusted according to arterial blood gas tensions.
