Abstract     Chest physical therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation are important forms of management of COPD. The major goal is to decrease respiratory symptoms and improve quality of life. In evaluating the benefits, it is difficult to estimate relative contributions of specific therapies because they are integrally related. Coughing and chest physiotherapy aid the clearance of secretions. Relaxation techniques pursed-lip breathing and breathing retraining help to cope with acute dyspnea. Exercise programmes and re-education of managing daily activities improve the quality of life but the programme must be maintained because benefits disappear rapidly if exercises are discontinued.
