Abstract     The article contains a short outline of efforts to prevent child abuse in Slovenia from the first "round table" on this subject at Derčevi dnevi in 1979 until the seminar held at Ljubljana's Cankarjev Dom in November 1995. International cooperation is also mentioned. The article presents medical aspects of child abuse supported by photographs and diagrams. Next, there is a chapter on the duties of a physician in diagnosing child abuse in his clinic and hospital treatment. Emphasis is given to early diagnosis and hospitalisation of the child, since abuse usually continues at home in a more serious form if the doctor does not intervene. There is a statistical review of physically abused children treated in the Pediatrics department at the Clinical Centre and throughout Slovenia. At the end of his article, the author suggests - following the example of Scandinavian countries - the undertaking of action against any kind of corporal punishment of children, also within the family. The deeply-rooted belief of parents that they have the right to use corporal punishment against their child must be changed. it should be remembered that in 1992 the Slovene parliament ratified the UN Convention on children's rights which condemns any corporal or psychological abuse of children.
