Abstract     The word iatrogenic derives from the Greek word iatrea, meaning the art of healing or treating. An iatrogenic injury is thus any injury deriving from a physician's handling of the body, either during diagnostic procedures or in treatment. Modern medicine often cannot avoid iatrogenesis, while it is often an inevitable consequence of certain methods of treatment. An important component of iatrogenesis is thus the obligation to explain. Within such a broad framework, the analysis of iatrogenic injuries is a relatively difficult task and is full of pitfalls: there are no exact between a mistake, a complication and an iatrogenic injury, nor are there any generally accepted criteria on the form of reporting. The boundary between a mistake and a complication is especially important in dealing with iatrogenic injuries, for in assessing every iatrogenic injury, one must also analyse the natural course of a disease. In his article, the author analysed certain key elements of assessing iatrogenic injuries and concluded that, in assessing iatrogenic injuries, one must carefully weigh the circumstances in which a specific iatrogenic injury occured. There are several events which can influence their occurrence and course, both with physician and the patient: ranging from anatomic variations to pathological changes in the body to a physician's lack of skill and possible professional mistakes.
