Abstract     Respiratory distress is diagnosed in the presence of hypoxemia or hypercapnia. Clinical symptoms and signs of respiratory distress are determined by the underlying cause and the effects of hypoxemia or hypercapnia. Determination of hemoglobin saturation with oxygen may be a useful noninvasive method of detecting hypoxemia and monitoring effects of treatment with inspired oxygen. Maintenance of SaO2 above 90% is recommended.
