Abstract     All parts of the Chain of Survival are important for outcome of resuscitation. Percentage of survivors has increased especially due to shorter period from onset of cardiac arrest to defibrillation. ILCOR (International Liaison Commitee on Resuscitation) has issued guidelines for implementation of early defibrillation in BLS ambulances, hospitals, and in the field, as well as instructions for assessing its effectiveness. So far clear guideliness for activation of non-medicel personnel have not been issued. Introduction of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) has according to some authors caused an increase in cardiac arrest survival since non-medical first responders have been given a chance to defibrillate. These devices should be posted on locations of mass gatherings. AEDs are not yet available in Slovenia. Number of defibrillators in health clinics, however, has increased over the past two years. In addition to continous education of professional teams performing resuscitation, a special emphasis has to be made on training first responders (police, fire, military, etc.) for resuscitation and use of AEDs.
