Abstract     Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Slovenia is rare if compared to the total infant population - it's incidence in the Republic of Slovenia is 0.5/1000 or one death per 2000 livebirth. However it is quite important cause of death during infancy and it represents 10% of infant mortality (11 out of 105 deaths for the year 1995). Recent SIDS research revealed that there is no single cause of death as multiple factors are involved (genetical, environmental, metabolic, infectious, cardiorespiratory and those dependent of brainstem maturity) which can act together at a certain time on a certain infant. Recent concerted European multicentered (incl. Slovenia) study mentioned also in this article, revealed lyingprone during sleep as one of the most important risk factors, which can be influenced upon. During recent years it has become obvious that certain preventive measures during early infantile life can substantially reduce mortality rate due to SIDS, however it has also become obvious that all infant deaths due to SIDS will never be preventable. We must be aware of this fact when planning awareness raising campaigns on SIDS. They should be encouraged but objective and recent data, best from the regional research studies, should be included and most objective perspectives given to the public.
