Abstract     Rapid diagnosis and treatment of medical emergencies in older persons is often impaired because of altered responses of illness to the stress. Identifying the locus of disease by presenting symptoms demands careful and comprehensive evaluation. Among the earliest signs of illness is frequently deterioration of functional independence with the absence of typical symptoms and signs of the disease. At the Department of emergency medicine, University medical center Ljubljana, the most frequent causes of admittance are heart failure, respiratory infections, ischemic heart disease, and gastrointestinal disorders (peptic ulcer and hemorrhage from the upper gastrointestinal tract). 53% of examined patients are hospitalised. Discordance of diagnoses between general practitioners and specialists of internal medicine is noted in 25% of admitted patients.
