Abstract     Management of the emergency patient demands a clinitian skilled and prepared to use multiple options for intubation. Even though the digital technique is seldomly the intubation method of choice, it remains a useful technique in some emergency situations when standard intubation technique fail or when equipment is unavailable. Blind nasal intubation is one of alternative methods in some emergency situations, especially if mouth clousure is present. An underused but effective method is retrograde intubation. The technique involves passing a catheter or guide wire through cricothyroid membrane up and out of the oral cavity to be used as a guiding stylet for the endotracheal tube. Retrograde intubation is especially useful when the vocal cords cannot be visualised due to blood, secretions, or anomalous anatomy. Light-guided endotracheal intubation technique can be regarded as another technique for airway management, but special equipement is needed. In rare cases, it is impossible to intubate the trachea. In the past few years, an alternative method for airway and ventilation management have been described that can be instituted blindly and quickly and appear to have a low risk/benefit ratio; this is the Combinated Esophageal Tracheal tube - Combitube.
