Abstract     According to data of the Cancer Registry of Slovenia, 212 males and 43 females with newly diagnosed cancers of the lip, oral cavity, salivary glands and oropharynx were registered in 1994. The incidence is generally seven times higher in males than in females. While the crude cumulative incidence of cancers of the tongue, other parts of the oral cavity and oropharynx has been increasing, the incidence of lip cancer shows a decreasing trend. The majority of oropharyngeal cancers are discovered in an advanced stage with regional lymph node involvement. The five-year survival of patients with cancer of the oral cavity is 20%, the corresponding rate for pharyngeal cancer is 13%. In survivors, second primary cancers occur 3.5 times more frequently than in the general population. The group at risk includes alcoholics, most of whom are smokers as well.
