| Abstract | Bleaching of teeth with carbamide peroxide has been used increasingly since first reported by Haywood and Heymann in 1989. During the procedure, carbamide peroxide is in contact with oral tissues. Since the side effects of the treatment have not been adequately investigated, its use remains controversial. The mechanism of action and the known side effects of the technique are discussed. | |
