Abstract     The article attempts to illuminate the dynamics of interrelation between success at school and self-image from the perspective of Erikson's theory of psycho-social development. The introduction explains success at school from the perspective of the objective and the subjective (i.e. the psychological dimension) and then proceeds with Erikson's understanding of psycho-social development. Special attentionis paid to developmental conflicts and the shaping of identity. The next part presents the research in which 230 young people from Slovenia and France with different levels of success at school participated. Participants filled in the questionnaires relating to self-image and their personal characteristics. Results show that there are several areas of self-image in which students with low levels of success at school - regardless of nationality - differ from medium successful and particularly highly successful students. Finally, the article attempts to explain, or rather speculate about, the possible relation between success at school and self-image from the perspective of the theory of psycho-social development.
