Abstract     Out-patient drug prescribing in Slovenia has been continuously recorded since 1974. Recorded data from issued prescriptions are: the trade name, quantity and total cost of the drug dispensed, the prescribing physician, year of birth and sex of the patient. The monitoring of drug prescription in Slovenia has been based on the Uniform Classification of Drugs (UCD). On the basis of UCD, registered drugs are classified into 19 pharmacodynamic groups (PG), which are further divided into subgroups. WHO recomends that the Anatomical Therapeutic (ATC) classification system should be used for the classification of drugs. In Slovenia this system will be adopted in the begining of 1998. Drug consumption figures for 1995 and 1996 are already presented according to ACT classification. The basic unit of measure for prescribing drugs is the prescription (only one drug can be prescribed per prescription in quantity which doesn't exceed three months of treatment period). This report presents detailed information about the prescribing of drugs in 1996 in Slovenia according to ATC classification. All figures presented in this report are based on ATC version valid from January 1996. Figures are given in terms of volume (number of prescriptions) and cost in local currency (SIT). Report deals mainly with 1996 figures, but also gives some figures for the last six years. Figures do not include over the counter sales in pharmacies. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
