Abstract     This paper reviews some of the most important texts on the bioethical aspect of the present and possible future uses of gene technology on human beings. The recommendation of the Council of Europe on genetic testing and screening for health care purposes, the recommendation on prenatal genetic screening, prenatal genetic diagnosis and associated genetic counselling, and the recommendation on DNA analysis in criminal justice system are reviewed in some detail. Particular attention is given to the Convention for the protection of human rights and dignity of the human being with regard to the application of biology and medicine, and its Explanatory report. These documents have provided basis for the provisions in the human genetics section of the Slovene draft law on gene technology. Also mentioned are some other international endeavours in this field, those by the European Parliament and the European Commission, as well as UNESCO. It is pointed out that most of the present ethical standards originate from the poineering work of the World Medical Association. Present developments in bioethics seem to be quickly following the pace of the explosive developments in life sciences. This is well illustrated by the example of exceptionally prompt and vigorous response by a number of national and international bodies to the possible new threat of abuse of biotechnology envisaged after the report on successful cloning of a sheep by somatic nuclear transfer. The bioethical scene of today seems to justify an optimistic outlook for the future.
Summary     Članek podaja pregled čez nekaj najpomembnejših besedil o bioetičnih vidikih sedanje in možne prihodnje rabe genske tehnologije na človeku. Nekoliko podrobneje povzema priporočila Sveta Evrope o genskih preiskavah in presejanju za zdravstvene namene, o predrojstnem genskem presajanju, predrojstni genski diagnostiki in s tem povezanem genetskem svetovanju in o rabi analize DNA v okviru kazenskopravnega sistema.
