Abstract     In elementary health care, a specially trained doctor and a nurse take care of the patient with diabetes. With examinations in accordance with the basic service standards, they provide quality health care to patients with disturbed glucose tolerance and with type 2 diabetes on diet and peroral therapy. In aged persons suffering from diabetes, the treatment of other existing illnesses has to be considered; the manner and methods of treatment have to be adapted to the psychophysical condition of the aged person. In the old age, acute difficulties are primarily prevented, as chronic difficulties cannot be significantly influenced. The co-operation of the patient's family and home nursing is indispensable. They have to be instructed thoroughly about correct treatment and solution of acute complications.
