| Abstract | Panoramic tomography of the maxillo-facial region provides maximum information on pathologic changes in the upper and lower jaws while exposing the patient to a minimal radiation dose. The paper presents new guidelines for the use of panoramic tomography in diagnostic assessment of diseases and injuries involving the maxillo-facial region. The benefits and shortcomings of the method are discussed. Panoramic tomography should be undertaken as the initial x-ray study in patients seen for the first time, in the presence of clinical signs demanding radiographic evaluation, in patients presenting with a mandibular injury, and prior to initiation of orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment. | |
