Abstract     The water used in dentistry for colling high-speed dental handipieces is frequently contaminated with bacteria from the water supply or the patient's saliva. In modern tubines, antiretraction valves prevent the retrograde spread of oral microbes into the dental turbine. However, bacteria tend to adhere to the valve surface, where they enclose themselves in a protective polysaccharide matric, forming a bacterial film that represents a constant potential source of infection. Therefore, thorough two-phase disinfection after each patient visit and regular daily sterilisation of the handipience are of vital importance, regardless of the turbine design.
