Abstract     OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to examine the time course of recovery of the left atrial (LA) mechanical function after successful cardioversion of atrial fibrillation (AF) to sinus rhythm by means of serial echocardiographic studies. BACKGROUND. Although conversion of atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm can usually be accomplished by drug or electrical therapy, full recovery of atrial mechanical activity may not occur immediately after successful cardioversion. To evaluate the time course of recovery of left atrial mechanical function serial M-mode, two dimensional (2D) and transmitral pulsed Doppler echocardiographic studies can be used as noninvasive diagnostic methods. METHODS. After they had accomplished criteria, 21 patients with nonvalvular AF of various duration were included in this study. The AF was converted to sinus rhythm either by drug or electrical therapy or spontaneously. Using M-mode, 2D and pulsed Doppler echocardiography LA dimensions, fractional shortening (FS) of left ventricles (LV), peak velocities, velocity - time integrals of early and atrial filling velocityime profiles (peak E, peak A, VTIE,VTIA), and deceleration times of E waves (DT) were measured. Patients were examined immediately after conversion, one week, one month, and three months after cardioversion if they remained in sinus rhythm.
