Abstract     A brief description of the method of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) is given. After stroke, SEP changes can be recorded, reflecting impairment of the somatosensory system. We have studied the patients with stroke caused by an ischaemic lesion in the region of the middle cerebral artery. SEP changes were correlated with the clinical signs and SEP prognostic value was determined. The comparison revealed good correlation between the sensation abnormality and abnormal SEP of the median nerves. The measurements revealed that good complex rehabilitation can be expected in those patients with normal or mildly abnormal SEP values while the worst prognosis is seen in patients with no SEP.
