Abstract     Objective: to determine whether there has been a change in semen quality in a group of healthy men in time period 1983-1996 in Slovenia. Desing: retrospective analysis of the relationship between time (year of spermiogram) or men year of birth and changes in semen parameters over 14 years using multiple linear regression analysis. Setting: University medical centre with IVF-programme. Main outcome measures: age, time of abstinence, date of semen collection, semen volume, sperm concentration, total number of permatozoa per ejaculate, percentage of motility and sperm morphology were evaluated in 2343 healthy men with normal spermiogram according to WHO criteria - male partners of women with exclusive tubal infertility factor included in the IVF-programme from 1983 to 1996. Results: in the whole population, we did not find out any decrease in volume, sperm concentration, total serm count per ejaculate, total motility, and percentage of normal sperm morphology during time. The only modification we observed was a decrease of the percentage of rapidly moving spermatozoa. More impressive was the decrease of sperm concentration in the men born after 1950. Conclusion: we concluded that in studied population of 2343 healthy men, although there has not been any decline in semen quality, except in rapid sperm motility during time, we noted that a later year of birth was associated with lower sperm concentration.
