Abstract     One of the most important questions related to data protection and security is the relation between patient and physician. The patient is the data owner and he must be informed that his personal data are gathered and processed, and only with approval can they be shown to other subjects. Besides the law on Health Care and the Law on Perosnal Data Protection, the acquisition, processing and use of patients' personal data in the Republic of Sloveni is now also defined by a document "Principles and guidelines for personal data protection in the health care information system". This document resulted from the several months long work of a project group from the Public Health Institute. It contains 9 principles and 67 guidelines for personal data protectin. It primarily refers to subjects who take part in the health care process (patient, doctor, health management, administrative worker, etc.) and to personal data which are being protected. The main purpose of this document is to develop awareness of security issues and to change attitudes as to the use of personal data.
