Abstract | The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the etiologic agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids) elicits a progressive and profound immunosuppression through a depletion of helper CD4+ T lymphocytes. This review focuses on the molecular aspects of HIV genome organization, virion structure and replication. The structural, regulatory and accessory proteins of HIV are discussed in terms of their multifunctional role in virus replication and pathogenicity. The potential mechanisms by which HIV causes destruction or dysfunction of T lymphocytes and macrophages are also briefly summarized.
Summary | Virus človeške imunske pomanjkljivosti (HIV), povzročitelj sindroma pridobljene imunske pomanjkljivosti (aidsa), sproži množično uničenje pomočniških limfocitov T CD4+, zaradi česar pride do napredujoče, obsežne oslabitve imunskega sistema.
