Abstract     Blood samples stored afatrer alcoholometric testing in the laboratory for 2 years at 4 degreeC are suitable for additional tests involving the measurement of biochemical markers of excessive alcohol consumption - methanol, acetone and isopropanol, GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase), CDT and GGT activities can only be measured in cases in which an amount of unhaemolysed serum is isolated (0.5 ml - 1 ml) and stored at 20 degreeC, for up to a year. Important limitations are also imposed by the quantity of the blood sample needed for alcoholometric and other tests. Blood sent for alcoholometric testing to assess if a person is under the influence of alcohol is considered to be admissible evidence, and the list of those who can demand further testing on this evidence is limited. The justification for performing tests for biochemical markers of excessive alcohol consumption on blood taken from road users under the influence of alcohol lies in the chance of discovering people with serious problems at the earliest opportunity. The danger of their presence on the road is recognised, but they represent only one risk group amongst road users. The preparation of suitable and effective rehabilitation programmes is the next logical step in the detection and elimination of risk for road users.
