Abstract		The 250th anniversary of the birth of Žiga (Sigismund) Zois, that great illuminator at the turn of the eighteenth century in Carniola, gives us the opportunity of remembering him not only as the great polymath and cultural patron but also as a yoologist. He was one of the first to study our cave endemite, the "human fish" (Proteus anguinus), and in 1807 he published a major study of it in Ljubljana.
