Abstract     Background. Biological rhytms, or regular repetition of biological events are cardinal feature of living organisms and are important determinant of work performance in man. In this review we characterize general properties of circadian rhythms, particularly those connected with sleep-wake cycle, temperature, and some hormones. Conclusions. Besides, we describe the role of the pineal gland in the generation of circadian rhythm. We present a contemporary view on the effects of light on humans and on the phototherapy. In addition, we describe ultradian rhythms connected with the secretion of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones, which result in the infradian rhythm of the ovulation cycle in women and analyze possibilities of the influence of melatonin on the reproductive function in animals and in man. Finally, we present a review of epidemiological research on two popular infradian rhythms that are both deficient in scientific explanation, on the influence of lunar phases on man, and biorhythms that are based on the day of birth.
Summary     Izhodišča. Ritem nekaterih periodičnih fizioloških pojavov in spanje sta pomembna dejavnika, ki vplivata na učinkovitost pri izmenskem delu. V ta namen smo označili splošne lastnosti cirkadianih ritmov, posebnosti ritmov, ki so povezani z menjavo budnosti in spanja ali temperature in nekaterih hormonov. Zaključki. Opisali smo nevroendokrino funkcijo epifize pri generiranju cirkadianega ritma. Podali smo sodobni pogled na učinke svetlobe na človeka in fototerapijo. Opisali smo še ultradiane ritme, ki so povezani z izločanjem hipotalamičnih in hipofiznih hormonov, kažejo se v infradianem ritmu ovulacijskega ciklusa, ter podrobneje razčlenili možnosti delovanja melatonina na reproduktivne sposobnosti pri živalih in pri človeku. Na koncu smo dodali pregled epidemioloških raziskav o dveh popularnih infradianih ritmih, o vplivu luninih men na človeka in o bioritmih, ki temeljijo na datumu rojstva, čeprav nimata prave znanstvene razlage.
