Abstract     The diagnosis of bovine spongiform encephalitis - BSE in short - was first made in Great Britain in 1986 and lead to extensive epidemiological and other research into central nervous system diseases in cattle and other animals. Interest in the human variety also grew, although it had been overshadowed by more important diseases. The majority of our readers is probably more familiar wityh the term invented by the media "mad cow disease". The infected ciws arem if ciyrsem bit "mad", but show signs of damage to the central nervous system with various physical and behavioral disorders.
