Abstract     Antitumoral agents are used widely nowadays, but unfortunately they have a number of adverse side effects resulting from the mechanism of their action. Certain combinations of antitumoral agents can considerably increase the risk of second tumor occurrence, particularly of acute non-lymphocytic leukemia. Further development of cancercidal drugs is centred on the search of substances which modulate the effects of standard drugs and increase their therapeutic indices rather than exert a direct cytoxic effect by themselves. The sunstances that are expected to meet these criteria include potential immune response modulators, accelerators of cytotoxic drug effect and normal tissue protectors. The trend of development is directed into the detection of new agents which would exert a selective effect on cancer sells, as well as into search for new transport systems to cancer cells.
