Abstract		The main purpose of this research was to establish how the Slovenian pharmacists deal with the growing medical awareness of the populatoin and increasingly responsible task - expert counselling to patients concerning the use of non prescription drugs. In order to examine the level of knowledge the pharmacists exhibit in this function, we have carried out an interview in 34 Slovenian pharmacies, using the non prescription analgesics as the exemplary drug. We have been testing their attitude towards the patients so that the researcher introduced himself as a customer with a headache. Special emphasis has been placed on the ability of pharmacists to choose the appropriate drug for the indication and at the same time consider the individual characteristics of the patient. It has become evident that the pharmacists are not yet quite prepared for this task, which is comprehensible with view to the lack of suitable literature and educational programmes to upgrade their knowledge. As far as expert counselling to patients is concerned we could say in this perspective the funciton of pharmacists is not yet entirely alive. The most probable cause are long queues in pharmacies that give pharmacists no opportunity to dedicate each patient enough attention, and the fact that fact that a wider range of non prescription drugs has become available only recently. In this respect counselling to patients in connection with non prescription drugs is a relatively new field of work for which the pharmacists will have to be systematically prepared.
