Abstract     For several tens of thousands of years man has hunted various deer. Before he became a herdsman, probably no animal represented a more prized trophy that the deer. Later man kept them nearby in hunting enclosures, which saved many deer from extermination. But all deer still remain wild animals: often docile but never truly tamed. The rare northern people with more or less domesticated reindeer have adapted their lives to them much more than the reindeer have adapted to their shepherds.
