Abstract     Rationale. The namber of cases of microsporosis in humans and in animals has increased over the last fifteen years. Methods. An epidemiological survey was carrnied out in the Ljubljana region in 1996 on 351 residents infected wityhy Microsporum canis. Results. Those affected were predominantly the children of families owning mostly asymptomatically infected cats. The source of infection was usually a domestic (43.0%), neigh bour's (20.8) or stray (11.1%) can. In a few cases, the source was unknown. Conclusions. It is very difficult to control infection in animals a humans and there is a possibility of reinfection. Healt education aimed at the parents of pre- or school-aged children is therefore a very important way of preventing the spread of disease.
