Abstract     Background. Syphilis, because of constant decrease, nearly-forgotten classical sexually transmitted disease, has become interesting again. Epidemiology and clinical picture. Bacause of a considerable decrease of syphilis in the last twenty-year period the disease has lost some of the attention and has been neglected to a certain degree. In 1994 the incidence in Slovenia increased to 1.82 per 100,000 inhabitants, and 1.85 in 1995 which equals the situation as ti obtainewd 13 years ago. Brief presentation of the clinical picture of syphilis, important for the differential diagnosis of certain cutaneous and mucosal diseases and procedures for accurate and immediate diagnossis are presented. Conclusions. Epidemiological situation of syphilis in Slovenia and in the neighbouring countries warrants strict surveillance by our medical services. The methods of treatment in our country are adjusted to similar procedures inthe developed world.
