Abstract     According to the pathogenesis, allergic contact dermatitis is defined as a chronic, recurrent dermatosis, whose manifestations appear following the contact of the skinof a sensibilised individual with the contact allergen. An outline of the ethiopathogenesis of contact allergic dermatitis, with special emphasis on the role of epidermal Langerhans cells, is given. The commonest contact allergens, responsible for the elicitationof this skin disease on the hands, are described. The clinical picture and the differential diagnosis are discussed in detail. Finally, the author summarises the principles of the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of allergic contact dermatitis.
