Abstract | Patch testing is the basic step in diagnosing contact allergic dermatitis and a prerequiste for its successful treatment. Only a strictly standardised procedure of testing, performed by an expert dermatologist with a knowledge of clinical allergology, as well as a correct interpretation of test reactions, can lead to reliable results. An outline of the application of patch tests is given. The importance of the selection of allergens, of the correct concentrations of test substances, as well as of the selection of the appropriate test method, is emphasised. Special methods of patch testing, such as abrasion tests, open tests and photopatch tests, are outlined. The authors describe the interpretation of various test reactions; they stress the possibility of false-negative and of false-positive results and explain the possible causes of such findings. The authors emphasise the correct evaluation of the relevance of test results, which is thecrucial part of the patch test procedure. | |
