Abstract     Epiluminescent microscopy is a modern, noninvasive, rapid technique for the differentiation of pigmented skin lesions. The method is valuable for distinguishing melanocytic and nonmelanocytic lesions, as well as for early identification of malignant melanoma. Observation of the skin surface, epidermis, dermoepidermal border and of the upper papillary dermis is possible. Different patterns of pigmentation and their structural charactheristics as well as the blood vessel structures can be observed. Due to great morphological variability of pigmented lesions considerable experience is required.
