Abstract     Clostridium difficile (CD) is the most important cause of nosocomial intestinal infections, psendomembraneous colitis and diarrheas occurring in connection with antibiotic treatment. CD forms part of the normal intestinal flora in approximately 3% of healthy people. In healthy neonates and infants as well as in hospitalized patients this percentage is higher. The composition of normal intestinal flora may be oestroyed by numerous factors. Antibiotic treatment can cause the settling and proliferation of CD as well as the producition stimulation of its toxins. This can result in diarrhea, in moderate enterocolitis up to severe forms of pseudomembranous colitis. Practically every antibiotic penetrating into the intestinal cavity could cause such a complication. Diarrheas caused by CD are treated symptomatically and with antibiotics. The most effective antibiotics used in the treatment of CD are vancomycin and metronidazole.
