Abstract     Differences between induced fluorescence of normal and malignant tissues offer new possibilities in early detection of laryngeal cancer. A Laryngeal Imaging Fluorescence Endoscopic system in which the fluorescence is induced by helium cadmium laser blue light was evaluated. It obtains and displays a fluorescence pseudo-image of the observed site. The normal tissue appears green and the malignant tissue is red. Fluorescence intensity measurement is also possible. 60 patients were observed. In 42 laryngeal malignancy was suspected. Estimation of pathologic changes obtained during laryngomicroscopy and fluorescence imaging were compared to histopathological findings. The study shows that fluorescence laryngoscopy may be a useful complementary method for detecting laryngeal malignancies. Its efficacy is similar to efficacy of laryngomicroscopy, but the two methods improve diagnostics when used in combination.
